Trout In The Classroom General Information

Trout in the Classroom is a conservation-oriented environmental education program for elementary, middle, and high school students. Through the school year, students raise trout from eggs to fry and then release them into approved cold water streams and lakes. This act of raising, monitoring, and caring for young trout fosters a conservation ethic within participating students and promotes an understanding of their shared water resources.

Currently FVTU supports 9 schools within our Chapter boundary, with over 20 overall in our history. Startup costs for the program equipment are estimated at $1200.00 to $1500.00 based on the latest prices.  Unless your program can be funded within your schools budget, FVTU will work with educators to identify and apply for local and national grants. Funding is one of the subjects discussed during our overview given on the program.

Equipment includes a 55 gallon aquarium, stand, chiller, filter, air pump and bubblers, and all maintenance supplies. After year 1, all maintenance supplies will be paid for and supplied by FVTU.

Further information on the technical aspects of the program including curriculum ideas can be found on the national TIC website at http://www.troutintheclasromm.org .
