HISTORY
The first program was started at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in 2005. Originally the participants serviced were vets returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, PHWFF has expanded nationwide, establishing its highly successful program in Department of Defense hospitals, Warrior Transition Units, and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and clinics. PHWFF has become recognized as an innovative leader and model in the field of therapeutic outdoor recreation for the disabled, through its successful application of the sport of fly-fishing as a rehabilitation tool. This whole program operates at no cost to the Vet.
Program activities may include, but are not limited to, fly fishing instruction, fly tying classes, fly casting workshops, rod building and fly-fishing outings.
Fishing outings and other PHWFF program activities have been featured on ESPN, CNN, FOX, and Fly Rod Chronicles, as well as local network television and cable stations, the web and major newspapers, magazines and other publications.
