Bittersweet Beatback

The Farmington Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited is again planning a March project to cut Oriental Bittersweet vines attached to trees along the river from the Farmington meadows/flats to Tunxis Mead Park.  Volunteers will spend 2 to 3 hours outdoors working along a section of the river to cut vines.  The objective is to eliminate vine foliage which can weigh heavily on treetops and obstruct healthy tree growth.  Doing so also prevents the vine from producing the pernicious orange seeds so attractive to the birds.

Temperatures should be seasonal in March but weather is uncertain, so we are targeting Saturday, March 19th with Saturday, March 26thas a rain/snow date.  Please check Facebook (Farmington Valley Trout Unlimited) or Instagram (fvtu_129) in case of weather uncertainty.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the parking lot on Meadow Road, across from the model aircraft field.  Teams will then be dispatched to relevant sections along the river.  Volunteers should wear work clothes, work boots and heavy gloves.  Don’t forget tick protection.  Since we will not have enough equipment, please bring a lopper and a small bow saw.  Chain saws for thick vines and pruning shears for smaller ones would also be helpful.

In order to create balanced teams, please RSVP by registering on Eventbrite which can be accessed here or on the website at  www.fvtu.org.

You may also get further information by calling 860-678-7245 or 347-491-9301 (or by emailing williamcase@comcast.net or seafarer0520@att.net).  Please join us for a great morning outdoors performing conservation work that everyone who enjoys walking along or fishing this section of the river will appreciate.
